We have 2 93 Mazda MX-3s. Both are the 1.8L V6 GS models in Blaze red, one is standard and one is automatic.

This Tuesday the transmission on the automatic went. It never gave me any trouble before - but then the "hold" light started flashing, it wouldn't go and that was it.

That's where it gets weird. I'm being told that most 1993 MX-3 V6 automatics have a 2 oil pan transmission - one at the bottom, one at the side. About 5% have less computerized version with only 1 oil pan at the bottom. Mine is one of them.

We've looked in every scrap yard in the Toronto area, craigslist, eBay, all the J-spec stores. There are no 1 pan transmissions avaliable. I've owned a Protege and driven a 626 in the past, and never had so much trouble finding a part.

Has anyone else ever come into contact with this 1 pan transmission?

Mine was a 2000 Protege. Great driver's car, but a pain to get parts for. After roughly 117,000 miles, it was getting expensive to repair. Plus, I was getting tired of the annoying electrical problems. Doors that wouldn't unlock, warning lights that wouldn't stay off, etc. Didn't help that it failed the Pennsylvania state inspection *twice* last year...and was going to cost a bundle to get fixed.
