We have 2 93 Mazda MX-3s. Both are the 1.8L V6 GS models in Blaze red, one is standard and one is automatic.

This Tuesday the transmission on the automatic went. It never gave me any trouble before - but then the "hold" light started flashing, it wouldn't go and that was it.

That's where it gets weird. I'm being told that most 1993 MX-3 V6 automatics have a 2 oil pan transmission - one at the bottom, one at the side. About 5% have less computerized version with only 1 oil pan at the bottom. Mine is one of them.

We've looked in every scrap yard in the Toronto area, craigslist, eBay, all the J-spec stores. There are no 1 pan transmissions avaliable. I've owned a Protege and driven a 626 in the past, and never had so much trouble finding a part.


Has anyone else ever come into contact with this 1 pan transmission?

It is a little slower sounding than it was, when it gets to the part where it should close, it makes a horrible "I'm trying to close but can't, dammit" sound. I usually have to back it up and push it with one hand while pushing the button inside. I should try that tip, though I think my mechanic said the motor was going out. Sigh. I love the car, but it isn't worth it to fix it right now when I'm a broke college student.

That's exacly what my window motor motor did before it died completely. The little motors themselves are not very expensive - $50 maybe, can be $20 if its from a junk yard or someone who's parting out a car privately. They are not too hard to put in yourself.
